When my daughter was born about 3 years ago, just a few weeks before the UK went into lockdown due to Covid-19, I had no idea how I was going to keep my baby safe from Coronavirus. I and the rest of the world knew little to nothing about this deadly virus, and not knowing what this virus could do to my newly born child drove my anxiety off the charts. Slowly and steadily as the world familiarised itself with the virus, our worries started to settle down and we began moving closer towards the life we knew before the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a parent though, do our worries ever end? Constantly worrying about our child's well-being is in a parent's job description and the anxiety associated with it is the pretty shiny wrapping these little bundles of joy come wrapped up in. Ask any parent, even the ones whose kids have become parents or even grandparents, and they will attest to the fact that you can never stop worrying about the safety of your children.
The cause of our worry keeps changing with time and age - from the deadly (and fatal!) Coronavirus, to SIDS, from choking to falling down the stairs, from stranger danger to numerous other things, the list is truly endless. One of the key things, however, for this tech-savvy generation, is the fear of the predators looming behind the anonymity of their devices. With more and more children using the internet for virtual schooling, personal learning, leisure and just communicating with friends and family, their exposure to the internet has substantially increased and is going to keep increasing more and more with time.
As a parent, hearing about the numerous horror stories of how technology is being used to harm our children sent shivers down my spine. The more I read and learnt about how naive and innocent children are being targeted, the more I realised how little I knew for someone whose bread and butter revolves around being on the computer day in and day out. Now imagine the plight of those parents who have no idea how technology works, or how innocent children are identified, groomed and harmed. In 2021 alone, there were about 29 million global cases of suspected online child sexual exploitation. It is therefore not a matter of if your child has an unpleasant encounter like this but rather when.
When I heard this, I wasn't well equipped to deal with this fact (not sure if I still am or ever will be) but the reality is what it is. The best we can do as parents then is to abreast ourselves with as much knowledge as we can about dealing with such situations and prepare not just ourselves but also our children to defend themselves against these inappropriate encounters. Children are after all our last line of defence in safeguarding themselves.
However, along with equipping our children with the tools they need to safeguard themselves, we also need to raise them as independent, strong and confident children in a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. This not only ensures children are more confident, happy and mentally and physically strong to deal with the different situations but also ensures that they can have open, guilt-free and judgement-free communication with their parents, which is crucial to ensure their safety at all times.
One Tiny Ripple has been created for parents like you and I.
